Chill Hill Cottage (formerly Jiu Tong Shan; La Fatté) sits at an elevation of about 800 meters, offering breathtaking scenery in every direction, from drifting mountain mists to sweeping views of a cloud sea. After retiring three years ago, owner Ms. Chu Yu-Wei, formerly general manager of Howard Beach Resort Kenting and Samiling Hotels and Resorts, partnered with friends to transform this lush, tranquil site into a hidden garden on the edge of the city. With its signature white architecture blending harmoniously into nature, it's an ideal retreat for a relaxing meal or peaceful cabin getaway.
A highlight of the estate is La Fatté Kitchen. The spacious semi-open dining area beneath a wood canopy is surrounded by greenery and, from dusk, guests can take in shimmering night views of Taichung. Inside, large glass windows, wooden furnishings and soft hues create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The restaurant seats about 160 guests and private events such as weddings or gatherings can be reserved in advance.
Head Chef Ah-Wen skillfully incorporates creative cuisine and seasonal vegetables into menu items. Signature dishes include the generously portioned Manor Roasted Pork Knuckle (NT$899), featuring tender, juicy meat with crispy skin, garnished with fresh local vegetables. The six-inch Deluxe Pizza (NT$399) may look small but offers rich layers of flavor. Other top recommendations are two guest favorites, Oven-Roasted Salmon Steak and Char-Grilled Pork Ribs (both NT$899). The owner is also deeply committed to ecological sustainability, harvesting pesticide-free fragrant marigolds grown on the estate to craft homemade floral tea, and offering a natural wellness device made from smoked ginger branches, believed to promote relaxation and antioxidant benefits.
For dessert, the handmade caramel pudding is a must-try. Its smooth, delicate texture and subtle milky aroma pair beautifully with slightly bitter, richly flavored caramel sauce. A self-serve beverage and coffee bar (NT$120/person) is also available, allowing guests to enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea in the picturesque setting. Chill Hill Cottage is pet-friendly as well; the owner has long cared for rescued stray cats and dogs, warmly welcomes owners to dine with their pets, and will launch a special pet-exclusive menu this spring.
