Five years after opening its main Taipei store, Lao Pang has launched a larger Taichung branch to serve its signature dishes from China's northeastern Jilin province. The cavernous interior creates a casual ambiance with colorful wall murals, painted and neon Chinese signs, and seating 150 at round tables and booths (plus two private rooms). A highlight of the a la carte menu is a wide range of grilled, juicy, savory meat skewers (starting at NT$30)—from Fatty and Lean Beef and Pork Kidneys to Chicken Hearts and Xinjiang Lamb—precooked with proprietary Northeastern Chinese spices and warmed over metal table charcoal grills. Non-skewer top sellers include a big BBQ Lamb Leg (NT$1,680), Chongqing Style Grilled Whole Fish (NT$1,280), Roasted Beef Bone Marrow (NT$320), and Northeast China Style Sauerkraut and Pork Hot Pot (NT$340, 2-3 people), served in a striking cloisonné hot pot. Various other dishes include a variety of grilled vegetable skewers and dishes (NT$25-120) and stir-fried seafood. Complementing this cuisine is draft Orion Beer, bottled beers, whiskies, sake and soju.
