Taichung is filled with Indian eateries but Mayur Indian Kitchen stands out for a number of reasons. Facing a tree-lined canal in a quieter neighborhood roughly half-way between Taiwan Boulevard and the Fengjia Night Market area, this establishment includes a well-stocked first-floor Indian grocery store selling everything from lentils, Indian desserts and canned sweets to handicrafts. Offering nice views of the outside waterway and greenery, the upstairs restaurant provides classy, comfortable surroundings for about 70 diners, including a bar, sofa area and small stage where there are Friday belly dance and Saturday-Sunday live jazz performances from 7 p.m.

Overseeing Taiwan's biggest Indian restaurant chain, CEO Mayur Srivastava in 2021 opened this place, followed last year by second, smaller Taichung branch Mirch Masala, focusing on lower-priced, authentic southern and northern Indian and Indian-Chinese dishes and street food snacks. Mayur says that each of his 14 restaurants has its own unique culinary and other features, with

Mayur Indian Kitchen Taichung being an upscale fine-dining establishment specializing in Punjabi and other northern Indian cuisine.

Popular menu mainstays include samosas, Chicken Tikka (NT$350), Butter Chicken (NT$350) and other rich, buttery, cashew-based curry dishes. Among best-sellers noted by Mayur are his chicken and lamb Biryani rice dishes, and Paneer Vindaloo (NT$325), a spicy tomato curry Goa specialty and one of several paneer selections made with Indian cottage cheese. Contrary to widespread belief, there are eastern and southern Indian beef dishes and Mayur's popular beef options—all made with Halal New Zealand buffalo (not cow) meat—include sauteed Karahi Beef in a masala curry, Palak Beef, and Buffalo Meat Tikka Masala. Despite the northern Indian focus here, diners also can enjoy Indian-Chinese specialties like vegetarian and chicken Momo steamed dumplings.

Other choices on the extensive menu include Mughlai Chicken Korma (NT$380), made with tomato-cashew curry, Kebab Skewers (NT$490, 8 pieces), Tandoori Vegetable (NT$250), 17 vegetable curry dishes—from lentil-based Punjabi Dal Tadka to Indian village specialty Pindi Chana Masala chickpea curry—and Indian and western desserts. Bottled beers (NT$120-150) include India's Kingfisher (NT$140, 4 for NT$400) and there are cocktails, whiskies and wines.

Mayur Indian Kitchen,
