Taichung City Government has been actively strengthening public transportation serving Taichung International Airport by promoting multiple bus routes that provide direct access in under 40 minutes to the MRT Green Line, Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), Taiwan Railway coastal line stations, and national highway bus transfer stations. Overall ridership has grown significantly, with the high-performing Rt. 333 standing out as one of the key airport connections. Running approximately 25 kilometres, Rt. 333 passes many of Taichung's major attractions and commercial hubs, including Taichung Metropolitan Park, Tunghai University, Maple Garden park, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, Top City mall, National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung City Hall, and Taichung Station. More than just an airport express route, it also serves as a "city sightseeing highlights route". Whether they're shopping at department store areas, visiting popular sightseeing spots or heading directly to Taichung Station for transfers to Taichung International Airport or other cities, passengers can travel conveniently across the city on Rt. 333.
Taichung International Airport has now expanded services with 26 international flight routes connecting to destinations in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau and Southeast Asia. The steady growth of the airport's international network has also led to an increasing demand for public transportation between the city center and airport. In response to this growth, the Transportation Bureau has continued promoting airport shuttle bus services, providing travelers with convenient, diverse transfer options and strengthening central Taiwan's international connectivity.
Taichung Transportation Bureau Director-General Yeh Chao-Fu notes that the city government has worked extensively to expand Taichung Airport's international flight network, adding that the bureau has also optimized bus schedules and route planning based on flight operations. In addition to existing buses such as Rt. 156, 162, 302 and 500 that connect major transfer hubs, new airport express and shuttle services like Rt. 679, 555 and 333 have been introduced to strengthen transportation capacity. Travelers departing from Taichung Airport can now reach the airport in just 30 minutes from major stations such as "Chaoyang Station" and "Wuqi Gaotieshang Station."
When visitors arrive in a city, transportation experiences often shape their first impressions. The popular Rt. 333 has become an important transportation corridor connecting the airport and urban districts. The trip to Taichung Station takes about only an hour, linking the city's central transportation network and serving airport passengers, commuters and transfer travelers alike.
As an airport bus route extending directly to Taichung Station, Rt. 333 provides convenient bus services for both arriving and departing travelers, making commuting, transfers and tourism more efficient.
Director-General Yeh also notes that Taichung International Airport serves as a key international gateway for central Taiwan. Public transportation connections to the THSR Taichung Station include Rt. 156 and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Sun Moon Lake Line (6670E), both offering direct service via National Freeway No. 3 or Provincial Highway No. 74, with travel times of approximately 30-40 minutes.
In addition, passengers can transfer via the MRT.
Taichung City Government currently operates 21 airport connection bus routes, integrating trunk and regional bus systems to meet daily commuting needs while also facilitating domestic and international travel. Route 333 operates on a fixed bidirectional schedule with 24 daily departures running from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. All buses are low-floor vehicles equipped with multi-level oversized luggage racks, making it convenient for baggage-toting travelers. For international visitors, these thoughtful details create an immediate warm and welcoming first impression when they arrive.
Director-General Yeh also points out that Taichung residents using transportation cards or the "Taichung Go" ride code can enjoy the city's exclusive "Double 10 Bus Fare" discount program, which offers free rides within 10 kilometers and a maximum fare cap of NT$10. The initiative encourages greater use of public transportation and helps reduce carbon emissions. Taichung warmly welcomes both local and foreign visitors to experience this happy, livable and globally competitive city.
Taichung City Government has assisted bus operators in installing large luggage racks on airport route buses to better accommodate passengers' luggage storage needs.
