Outside this place, you can observe the pastry chef sifting flour, making and molding dough, as the kitchen staff takes its time preparing various refined dishes. Inside, Chinese calligraphy, furniture and tea sets are on display, reflecting the inspiration behind zen-style garden landscapes. Shop owner Eva–from Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province–has a passion for tea-making with delicate porcelain, as well as her hometown delicacies. These include the Square Pastry, stuffed with not-too-sticky glutinous rice; Chinese Date and Japanese Yam Pastry, noted in “Dream of the Red Chamber”; and difficult-to-make Glutinous Rice with Salty Egg, which requires that the pastry chef fill a duck’s egg shell, washed with wine, with glutinous rice and spices. Rarities in Taiwan, the Narcissus Tea, White Tea and Yunnan Black Tea pair very well with these pastries. The shop cat, Meng Pie, also makes an appearance here on Fridays and Saturdays.
